In order to inherit and develop Professor Zhang Shuting's academic thoughts on edible and medicinal fungi, during the conference, Academician Li Yu led and initiated the "International Symposium on Professor Zhang Shuting's academic thoughts".At the seminar, Yang Xiaobing, a researcher of Guangdong Institute of Microbiology (hereinafter referred to as "Guang Wei Institute"), introduced the deep relationship between Professor Zhang and Guang Wei Institute.

In 1975, Professor Zhang Shuting, then dean of the School of Science of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and head of the Department of Biology of Chung Chi College, visited Guangzhou and was deeply impressed by Yangcheng. At the beginning of 1978, Professor Zhang was invited to Guangzhou for technical exchange and paid a visit to Guangwei Institute.

Yang Xiaobing, researcher of Guangdong Institute of Microbiology, made a sharing report.

At the end of 1979, Professor Zhang was invited to Guang Wei Institute for technical exchange and presented a number of precious straw mushroom, mushroom and Pleurotus ostreatus strains.Researcher Yang Xiaobing called this beautiful encounter the fate of the century blown by the spring breeze of the motherland's reform and opening up.

After that, Professor Zhang devoted himself to the technical guidance and achievement promotion work of Guang Wei Institute, "donating bacteria, teaching and cultivation", and made special achievements such as "confirming that Nanhua Temple in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province is the birthplace of straw mushrooms in the world", "three high prefectures to pass the scriptures and pass on treasures to create the main producing areas of mushrooms" and other special achievements, but also helped Guang Wei Institute to upgrade its instruments and help train elite backbone. He was affectionately called "South Guangdong Edible Mushroom mentor" by the leaders and researchers of Guang Wei.

In 2006, with the consent of Professor Zhang, Guangwei Institute decided to employ Professor Zhang as a visiting researcher to continue to guide the research work of edible fungi in the institute.

Since then, Professor Zhang has made important contributions to promoting international cooperation between Guangwei and the International Mushroom Association, cooperation and exchanges between China and Africa, and the investigation of wild macrofungi resources in Africa.

Researcher Guo Jun, then director of Guangdong Institute of Microbiology, led a team to visit Professor Zhang's home in Canberra.

In June of that year, researcher Guo Jun, then director of the Institute, led a team to Professor Zhang's home in Canberra, Australia, where he issued a letter of appointment to Professor Zhang, and was accompanied by Professor Zhang to Sydney. He visited Greg, president of the International Mushroom Association and president of the Australian Mushroom Association, to inspect the factory mushroom production plant in Sydney and had a pleasant exchange.

Professor Zhang introduced Greg Seymour President of the International Mushroom Association to the Guangdong Institute of Microbiology and his party.

In December of the same year, Professor Zhang went to Guangzhou to attend the International Symposium on Edible and Medicinal Fungi and Health at the invitation of Guang Wei Institute, and reported that he had served as a project evaluation expert of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Africa in recent years to help fight the spread of AIDS in Africa. The preliminary progress of its experimental research on Ganoderma lucidum anti-AIDS in Africa has been highly valued by the participants and the media.

From 2007 to 2008, under the suggestion and introduction of Professor Zhang, Guangwei conducted close cooperation and exchanges with Tanzania in Africa. The working group of Guang Wei Institute visited Tanzania and agreed on an international cooperation program for the collection of African wild fungi, the construction of edible mushroom cultivation plants in Tanzania and the anti-tumor and AIDS research of Ganoderma lucidum.

On the other hand, President HKMU, Scientific adviser to the President of Tanzania, was invited to visit and exchange in China and finalize the cooperation blueprint and mushroom factory design plan for the "China-Tanzania Cooperation Project for the production of Edible and Medicinal Fungi in Africa".

From June to July 2010, the secretary of the Guangdong Academy of Sciences and the director of the Guangdong Institute of Science and Technology led a team to Tanzania to inspect the implementation and reported the project to the President's Advisory Group of Chief scientists, the Minister of Science and Technology of Tanzania, the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania and the Counsellor.

By May 2011, all the international cooperation projects participated by Guang Wei have passed the acceptance inspection.

In recent years, Professor Zhang used his influence to recommend the conference of the International Mushroom Organization to be held in China, and made an outstanding contribution to expanding the influence of China's edible mushroom industry and scientific research in the world. Its "extremely ingenious" and "tireless" scientific research spirit has influenced generations of edible and medicinal fungus researchers. Here, I would like to pay the highest tribute to this rigorous and erudite "father of medicinal fungi".
